Customization Option to Disable Comments

I just want to make sure I understand this correctly.
Comments can usually be disabled in WordPress itself. Though, if they were turned on previously (which is the default behaviour) they need to be disabled for posts that have already been published previously.
What would we need an additional setting for?

I was thinking this could be an easy way to disable comments retroactively. Enabling this setting could remove the comments template from loading on past posts and update the settings of the future posts (under Settings > Discussion) with one toggle. I guess I see it as a convenience option for imported posts or inherited blogs but not something I would consider mission-critical at all.

I agree. It’s very convenient to have that setting available. This will be implemented under Blog -> Post Layout and available with the upcoming 2.9 release.
